‘Öffentliche Einrichtungen’ came up as a topic when someone asked about the word ‘öffentlich‘. The topic is great for basic vocabulary practice of everything around towns and cities. More advanced groups can check the wikipedia entry: Öffentliche Einrichtung – Wikipedia

Im Sommer 2024 konnte man auf dem Maschteich hinter dem Rathaus eine Mini-Erde schwimmen sehen. Es war eine Replika unseres Planeten Erde: eine große, aufblasbare Kugel, die im Teich verankert war.

Easy German

Easy German provides a number of videos to different kinds of topics. I use Easy French myself and really enjoy the real life situations. Explore.

Deutsche Welle supports learning German as part of their mission. Their department “Educational Programs” creates multimedial material for all levels (as defined by the EU ‘Europäischer Referenzrahmen’). For teachers and language trainers, all content is free to use and integrate into your classes. DW is a great webpage for every level of German learning. It provides a mix of audio, video, imagery and text from the very beginner level to advanced. To tell the truth, you don’t really need much more. Go there and explore.

If you are a complete beginner, do all the 100 lessons under Deutschtrainer. Do as much as you can fit into your everyday routines as possible. As much as I believe in the more the better – after all, children developing their first languages do nothing else all day – a little regularly will carry you a long way. It will just take a little longer, but you will get there. You won’t get anywhere if you do nothing 😉 (Links also above in ‘black area’)

Stories

Improve your language by reading stories slightly above your level. You should still be able to understand most of the text. It does depend on your tolerance for the unknown. However, a lot of the language we use in everyday conversation is highly repetitive. Some say for 80 percent of what we say we need 20 percent of a language.

Two examples: Café in Berlin, also as an audiobook; Short Stories in German
