Let’s look at some examples of adjective-noun combinations and find out how they change.

Substitute ‘grün’ by other adjectives and afterwards fill in the gaps in the tables above

(In the five examples above, an indefinite article would make no sense as these are mass nouns that don’t occur as one.)

Summary of the changes observed so far

German adjectives change depending on some grammatical features of the nouns or pronouns they describe. In the examples above, all changes related to the articles that came before the nouns.

Adjectives also change when the nouns are in plural form. However, piece of cake 😉

How adjectives change in the context of longer structures in relation to case or grammatical function of the nouns or pronouns they describe (subject, direct of indirect object, prepositional phrase), we will look at in a later step.
