My post The most frequent German Verbs (Part 1) | only takes a grammatical look at some frequent German verbs and classically lists their conjugated forms. However, if you want to internalize words, it is crucial to listen to how they are used in context and notice the other words they frequently collocate with.

As the verb WISSEN is one that recently came up in one of my classes, I will use it to demonstrate what I mean.

Some examples

Ich weiß, was du meinst.

Sie wissen nicht, wann die Konferenz beginnt.

Er weiß, dass er bald ein neues Auto braucht.

Wir wissen ungefähr, wieviele Gäste kommen.

Ich weiß nicht, ob unsere Getränke für die Party reichen.

Sie wissen nicht, warum die Straße gesperrt ist.

Ich weiß es nicht.

Wir wissen es auch nicht.

Er will wissen, warum du nicht kommen kannst.

Wir sollten wissen, bis wann wir Zeit haben.

Note: The examples above are just a few that allow some language observation. I use them to let my German learners see if they can find some patterns. When it comes to improving your overall language skills, I can not repeat often enough: exposure, exposure, exposure. Go to the sites you find at the bottom of this blog if you are still in the beginning stages. Once you are more advanced (say B1 or B2) go for authentic material. Watch television, quizshows, news magazines, or stream whatever you might fancy. I believe it doesn’t really matter in the beginning, what you listen to as long as you just do it and understand at least a little. (If you don’t understand ANYTHING, listening doesn’t make much sense.)
